Systems Theory And Contingency Theory: Understanding The Indian Context

Authors: Professor (Dr.) Lalith Kumar Dharvath

Abstract: This paper provides a critical analysis of Systems Theory and Contingency Theory within the unique socio-economic landscape of India. Systems theory views organizations as open, interconnected frameworks where internal subsystems collaborate to process external inputs. Conversely, contingency theory argues that there is no universal management style, emphasizing that organizational success depends heavily on adapting to specific, changing environments. While both frameworks originated in Western corporate ecosystems, their application in India requires navigating a distinct blend of traditional hierarchy, family-led conglomerate structures, and immense regional diversity.Through a contextualized lens, this study explores how large Indian business houses utilize systems thinking to maintain corporate synergy across highly diverse portfolios. Simultaneously, it examines how the volatile, dual-speed Indian market forces managers to rely on contingency-driven management—vividly captured by the culturally embedded practice of Jugaad (frugal, situational innovation). The analysis reveals that rigid adherence to standardized corporate blueprints often fails in the Indian marketplace. Instead, the paper concludes that a hybrid framework—one that harmonizes the structural wholeness of systems theory with the agile, hyper-local flexibility of contingency theory—offers the most resilient roadmap for organizational sustainability and strategic growth in India.

The Impact of Solar Energy System on Environmental and Social Sustainability

Authors: Abdul Waris Farid, Mohammad Naser Rasuli, Ghulam Hussain.R

Abstract: Energy production and technical efficiency are important aspects of energy systems, they should not be used to determine their sustainability of solar energy systems. The study combines environmental aspects of solar PV systems' life cycles with social aspects to explore their environmental and social sustainability impacts. Three different PV technologies—monocrystalline silicon, multicrystalline silicon, cadmium telluride—are analyzed, and the energy yield, module efficiency, greenhouse-gas emissions, energy payback time, and social aspects like employment, energy access, community benefits, and social acceptance are considered. An AHP-based framework is still maintained to highlight that on how the various sustainability dimensions can be incorporated into the PV assessment. The illustrative results show that PV technologies have various electrical and environmental features, and social outcomes are highly sensitive to project site settings and deployment environment, as well as community context. The paper emphasizes on the importance of integrated assessment for environmental and social sustainability in the planning of solar energy systems.
